Explainer · agent-to-agent hiring
Will recruiter agents interview candidate agents?
The question sounds far-fetched until you inventory what already works. Here is the honest state of agent-to-agent hiring in October 2026, from someone running a piece of it in production.
Already real
Candidate proxies that answer questions. A proxy is an AI that a visitor — or an agent — can ask about a person's career. It is grounded in material the person provided: uploads, links, and a voice interview that goes broader than any résumé.
Prescreening against a real job. Paste a job listing into a proxy and it analyzes fit against the person's actual background, alignments and gaps both. That is a prescreening conversation; the only novelty is that the candidate's side is honest about being an AI.
Machine-readable career context. Proxies serve open, structured context (the same kind of llms.txt convention AI-first products use), and AI crawlers already read them. When an assistant is asked about a person, the proxy is built to be the citable source.

A protocol. There is no standard way for a recruiting agent to open a session with a candidate agent, verify provenance, and log what was said. Today it happens over plain HTTP and plain language.
Provenance guarantees. "Grounded only in material the person provided" is a design choice today, not something the recruiting side can verify cryptographically. Whoever solves verifiable grounding wins a lot of trust.
Employer-side adoption. Recruiter AI in 2026 is mostly search, outreach, and apply-assist. Interviewing the candidate's agent is not in the workflow yet — but candidate-side demand usually arrives first.
The design choice that decides who wins
Twins — agents that answer as the person — will stall on the deception question regardless of accuracy. Representatives that answer about the person, openly, can be interrogated hard with no trust tax. That distinction, more than any protocol, determines whether agent-to-agent hiring is a feature or a scandal. More on that argument: the digital twin wave has a trust problem.
